Painting Guide: Lord of Hades
The Lord of Hades is a centrepiece miniature that rewards strong contrast, dramatic lighting, and controlled use of colour. With multiple interchangeable parts and poses, the model lends itself perfectly to bold, character-driven paint schemes that evoke dominance, brutality, and mythic authority.
1. Priming
Prime black or very dark grey to establish deep shadows across the sculpt. A zenithal spray of light grey or off-white from above is highly recommended to predefine volumes, especially across the armour plates, cloak folds, and exposed musculature.
2. Armour and Core Colours
Dark, oppressive tones work best for the Lord of Hades: blackened iron, deep crimson, scorched bronze, or cold bone-white armour all fit the theme well. Keep the primary armour colour restrained and consistent to avoid visual overload given the sculpt’s density of detail.
3. Shading and Weathering
Use targeted washes in recesses, joints, and between armour segments to deepen contrast. Subtle weathering—such as edge chipping, soot staining, or grime streaks—adds realism and reinforces the brutal, war-worn nature of a champion of Hades.
4. Highlights
Apply sharp edge highlights to armour edges and raised details. Focus brighter highlights on the helmet, chest, and weaponry to naturally draw the eye upward. Softer, blended highlights work well on cloth and organic areas to contrast with the hard armour plates.
5. Heads, Weapons, and Gore Details
The interchangeable heads allow for varied expressions—pale flesh tones, scarred skin, or unnatural hues all work well. Weapons should feel heavy and lethal; darker metals with selective bright edges help convey mass. For the arm holding the bloody brain, rich reds, purples, and gloss varnish can be used sparingly to create a visceral focal point.
6. Backpacks and Accessories
Keep backpacks slightly darker or more muted than the main armour so they don’t compete visually with the torso. Pick out skulls, trophies, and mechanical elements with subtle colour variation to add depth without breaking cohesion.
7. Basing
Both base options benefit from dark, infernal themes—cracked stone, ash, scorched earth, or ruined architecture. Neutral or warm base tones help frame the miniature while reinforcing the underworld aesthetic associated with Hades.
This set consists of ready-to-assemble parts. Super glue is best for assembly.
