The Dragon Knights Ravagers are the bleeding edge of their brotherhood's assault doctrine, five close-combat specialists clad in dragonscale power armour who hit enemy lines like a meteor strike and leave nothing standing behind them. Where conventional warriors rely on range and firepower, the Ravagers embrace the kill at arm's length, their crocodilian helms and scale-layered plate evoking the ancient apex predators their order venerates above all else. They are not merely soldiers, they are a philosophy made manifest, a declaration that the most honourable death is the one delivered eye to eye, blade to throat.
Their armour is immediately distinctive and deeply considered in its design language. Every plate is textured with overlapping dragonscale detailing, lending each warrior the appearance of a living reptilian engine of war. Swept-back horn clusters crown their helms, and snarling draconic face masks replace conventional visors, the suggestion being less of a warrior wearing armour and more of a dragon wearing a warrior as its avatar. Spiked pauldrons jut aggressively outward, reinforcing the squad's forward-momentum silhouette. The Dragon Knights aesthetic is one of contained, focused ferocity, these are not berserkers, but precision instruments of annihilation.
The squad's weapon loadout reflects their close-quarters specialism with clarity and confidence. Each Ravager carries a blade, short, heavy combat swords with serrated edges and reinforced crossguards built for punching through armour at close range rather than elegant duelling. Several models also carry secondary compact sidearm platforms at the hip, suggesting the squad can trade fire briefly before closing the gap with lethal intent. The champion at centre commands the eye immediately, his right arm raised high bearing an ornate powered mace or standard-weapon aloft, both a signal to advance and a promise of what follows.
That champion is the squad's visual anchor and tactical heart. His pose, mid-stride, weapon raised overhead, helm tilted slightly forward in challenge, radiates absolute authority. He wears slightly more elaborate armour than his brothers, with additional trim work and a more complex chest plate, marking him as the Ravager pack's apex. Flanking him, the remaining four warriors are spread in dynamic combat stances: low crouches, wide strides, sword arms cocked back, each one a frozen moment of imminent violence that the Dragon Knights have elevated to ritual.
On the tabletop, the Dragon Knights Ravagers serve as an elite shock assault unit, best deployed via rapid insertion to threaten high-value targets, strip objective holders, or tie up key enemy units in grinding close combat where their superior weaponry and armour can dominate. As a hobby project, this squad rewards painters who want to explore dramatic contrast between reptilian scale textures and gleaming trim metallics, with ample opportunity for dramatic fire-themed basing and freehand work on the scale plates.
Painting Guide: Dragon Knights Ravagers
The Dragon Knights Ravagers demand a bold, high-contrast paint scheme, the rich scale texture and draconic detailing reward careful layering and a fearless approach to colour.
1. Prime
- Zenithal prime with black base and a directional grey-white overspray from above (e.g. Vallejo Surface Primer Black + White); this immediately defines the scale texture and dramatically reduces highlight work across all five models.
2. Armour Base
- Basecoat all armour plates in a deep, saturated forest green (e.g. Caliban Green or Vallejo Dark Green) to honour the Dragon Knights' reptilian heritage, this rich base reads immediately as draconic and provides an excellent foundation for highlight work.
- Layer up through Warpstone Glow and Moot Green on raised scale edges, concentrating the brightest highlight on the topmost scales of each plate for a vivid, almost luminescent finish that suggests scales catching firelight.
3. Trim and Details
- Apply rich gold metallics (Retributor Armour or Scale75 Dwarven Gold) to all trim, horn clusters, crossguards, and chest iconography, the contrast between deep green and warm gold is the visual signature of this colour scheme and should be maximised at every opportunity.
- Wash all gold areas with Reikland Fleshshade for warmth, then apply Agrax Earthshade selectively into recesses; use Nuln Oil on all iron and mechanical components to push them back visually behind the dominant green and gold palette.
4. Weapons
- Paint blade flats in dark iron (Leadbelcher + Nuln Oil wash), then edge highlight with Stormhost Silver along the blade spine and tip for a sharp, battle-ready finish; crossguards and pommels in the same gold as the armour trim to maintain palette coherence across the Dragon Knights squad.
- For the champion's raised powered weapon, consider an OSL heat effect along the shaft, transition from dark grey at the grip through orange-red to bright yellow-white at the business end using Trollslayer Orange, Troll Slayer, and Flash Gitz Yellow, suggesting intense thermal energy barely held in check.
5. Weathering
- Sponge fine chips along all armour edges using Skavenblight Dinge over a white underchip, concentrating damage on knee plates, pauldron rims, and blade edges , the Dragon Knights fight hard and their armour should show it without losing its inherent nobility.
- Apply subtle scorch marks and heat staining around weapon housings and pauldron vents using diluted Nuln Oil and a fine brush, then dust lower greaves with dark grey and ash-brown pigment powders to suggest volcanic terrain clinging to the squad after a recent engagement.
6. Bases
- Base in volcanic rock and cooling lava, apply black texture paste or Astrogranite Debris, drybrush with dark grey then Administratum Grey for ashen stone, then fill cracks with thinned Bloodletter glaze over a white base to create glowing lava veins; orange and red pigment powders around the lava edges complete the effect and perfectly frame the squad's fiery draconic identity.
